Location: Toermalijn Community School, Beeklaan 184, The Hague
Joana Schneider is a textile artist. During her Textiles study at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague she developed her passion for textile techniques - especially knotting techniques from fishing. As a student she had a temporary studio in the building of the Toermalijn Community School. With the present commission she has returned to this location. The more than life-size rope works that Joana was working on at the time had captured the attention of the school’s art committee, and they invited the artist to make a monumental textile work for the school. Her playful use of unusual materials - discarded ropes and viscose threads made from recycled plastic bottles - is beautifully expressed in the Toermalijn in the form of a colorful butterfly in the entrance hall. It is a butterfly that spreads its wings over the children’s heads as a protector and a symbol of their transition and development.
