The pupils of the Blokpoelschool have gained their very own school mascot: a dog designed by sculptor Tom Claassen. The 1.2 meter high sculpture, which has appropriately been named Blokkie, stands guard over the school playground in Moerwijk. It is an apt symbol for the safe and unique environment formed by this school. Tom Claassen studied at AKV/St. Joost in Breda and is known for his works in public space. While his art can be quite unusual, his works share distinctive common traits. They often have round, soft shapes and are mostly made of hard materials such as bronze, wood, aluminium, plastic and concrete. His works are robust and large in scale, but at the same time rather endearing, approachable and accessible to a wide audience.
